Heartburn

Heartburn is one of the most common discomforts women experience during pregnany; and, no, it dosen’t have anything to do with whether or not the baby has hair. It happens because the entire gastro-intestinal system slows down in pregnancy and there can be a small (or big) reversal of stomach acid. This reversal causes discomfort in the esophagus.

There are countless tricks to avoiding heartburn in pregnancy, but here are a few good ones.

Prevention

Eat smaller meals
Don’t lie down until at least one hour after eating
Avoid triggers. Triggers can be different for everyone, so make a note of what yours are. Some common triggers are: Spicy foods, fatty foods, sugary foods, processed flour.
Drink Alkaline water and/or aloe vera juice (no sugar added)
Avoid sugars. Sugar is very irritating to the esophagus
Eat apples every day

Natural Treatments

A lukewarm glass of matcha (japaneese green tea) can usually do the trick
Drink 1/2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
Drink milk or yogurt
Take 1-2 Tums
Eat an apple
